Car and outdoor web shop
A web shop for car and outdoor products, with two physical stores. From 2018 to 2021 I worked on it, and on its sister site, as an in-house developer.
I was the web developer: maintenance, new features, sync between the business system and the web shop, and building the development environment.
With car and outdoor products, shoppers often do not know what fits their car. The range is large, demand is strongly seasonal, and stock is shared between the stores and the web shop.
My job was to keep the shop working from fresh data, get new features out quickly, and keep development off the live site.
Car finder
Exactly fitting products for a given car, so shoppers need not guess which rack or box suits it.
Catalogue and promotions
A wide range with categories, promotions, new arrivals and best sellers, with percentage-discount indicators.
Stock at a glance
Stock status for each product, with orderable items flagged separately.
Account and shopper tools
Cart, account, orders, wishlist, product comparison, discount and gift codes, and gift vouchers.
Rental and services
Rental options for products and extra services alongside purchase.
Content and newsletter
A blog, newsletter sign-up, price comparison partner sites, and cookie consent managed by category.
Categories, promotions, new arrivals and popular products, with a prominent search.
Filtering by price, availability and brand, stock status, discounts and quick add to cart.
A brand introduction, featured models and filters in one place.
With brand and customer names and personal data removed (except the app store screenshots).
Business system and web shop in sync
I built the sync between the in-store business system and the web shop, so data does not have to be moved by hand.
Two sites
I looked after two web shops, not one, so it made sense to write the shared parts once.
A test environment before going live
I built a local and an online development environment where new things can be tried before they go live.
Stock must always match
Stock and price live in the business system. My task was to make the web shop show what the store shows, with nothing retyped by hand.
Do not experiment on the live site
I like to release a new feature after I have already seen it work. That is why I built the local and online test environment.
Old code, many technologies
The work included Smarty templates, WordPress and Laravel, and I had to write new features and maintain all of it alongside them.
Exact-fit search
Filtering products by vehicle, to reduce wrong orders and returns.
Transparent stock and price
Percentage and original-price display for discounts, stock-level states, and separate handling of orderable products.
Privacy compliance
Cookie consent per category (functional, analytics, marketing), so measurement only starts with permission.
Stores and web shop together
Two stores' details, opening hours and contacts as part of the web shop, with the same brand experience.
A long-running web shop that, by its own account, has served over 15,000 orders. Because of the synced data and the test environment, new features went out more safely.
Does your web shop need development or syncing?
Stock, price, business system: I help keep them in agreement.
